How Are Pediatric Braces Different From Adult Braces?

Several differences exist between pediatric and adult braces. For example, pediatric braces generally cost less, are smaller, are worn for shorter periods of time, and are lighter. Child braces are often worn for two years or less due to greater plasticity in the body at a younger age, while adults will wear theirs for three years or more. Child brace options are also often more comfortable for minors to wear than larger alternatives.

What Types of Pediatric Braces Are Available?

Many options of pediatric braces are available on the market, including traditional metal braces, Invisalign, ceramic and porcelain brackets, lingual braces, mouth guards, and more. However, each option has its own positive and negative sides, meaning certain choices will be better suited for your child than others.

When Should Your Child Get Braces?

Most children who are referred for braces will get them between the ages of nine and 14, though there is no wrong age for your child. As long as all of your child’s adult teeth have grown in, they may be a good candidate for braces or Invisalign, depending on their specific needs and circumstances.

Children as young as six and with remaining baby teeth may be eligible to start Invisalign First aligners.

Is Your Child a Better Candidate for Braces or Invisalign?

Without a formal consultation, there is no way to completely determine your child’s eligibility or candidacy for a dental tool. However, there are several factors that your child’s orthodontist will be on the lookout for when making one recommendation or the other.

Your child may be a strong candidate for pediatric braces if they look like the following:

  • They don’t care if others see their braces
  • They have a significant alignment or bite issue that Invisalign cannot correct
  • They have all their adult teeth
  • They are open to learning how to properly brush and floss with braces on
  • They don’t want to worry about forgetting something new

On the other hand, your child may be a strong candidate for Invisalign First for children and pre-teens if they identify with the following:

  • They don’t want others to see their braces
  • Their alignment issues can be addressed without rubber bands
  • Their teeth can be aligned by Invisalign
  • They have all or most of their adult teeth, though they can still have some remaining baby teeth
  • They are responsible enough to remember their aligner trays
  • They are committed enough to wearing their Invisalign trays for 22 hours a day
  • They want to spend less time in the dentist’s office for tightenings and adjustings
  • They want something easy to remove and clean
  • They want less discomfort or emergency visits to the dentist
  • They do not wish to or cannot have additional dietary restrictions

There are also other considerations you will want to be aware of as the individual paying for the procedure. For example, there may be cases where braces are less expensive than Invisalign. However, depending on your coverage or provider, Invisalign and braces may be more similar in cost.
