What is Children’s Dentistry?

We know that a child’s earliest experiences at the dentist and shape how they feel about dental care for a lifetime. It’s an honor to focus on the needs of our youngest patients in an area that requires not only dental skill, but also the ability to communicate with and care for the most vulnerable among us.

Bringing your child to the dentist

What You Should Know

We start seeing patients as soon as they get their first teeth. The earlier your child visits the dentist, the more comfortable they’ll be with dental appointments in the future — and the sooner we can head off any problems before they become serious issues. Because we understand how important these early experiences are, we take a lot of extra care to make sure they love coming to the dentist!

Lake Nona Children's Dentistry Questions & Dental Services

What age should I bring my child in for their first visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child in for their first visit between 6 months and 1 year, around the time they are getting teach. It familiarizes your child with dentist visits and lets us see if there are any developmental issues.

What happens on my child's first visit?

Pretty much the same as what happens as an adult. There are x-rays, a visual inspection of the mouth, and a cleaning with fluoride treatment. Then your child will get a new toothbrush and you’ll be on your way!

Why should my child get x-rays?

The recommendation is that the first x-rays come at around 3 years of age. This allows for the not only the crucial part of growth to happen but it also gives them a chance to get comfortable coming to the dentist’s office. It also allows them to make sense of their answer to “why?” which is “We’re taking pictures of your teeth!”

How often should I bring my child to the dentist?

The recommendation is the same for adults: twice a year (once every six months.)

Why do I have to care for non-permanent teeth?

For at least two reasons: one, you don’t want your child to experience pain or difficulty when they’re eating or talking. That’s what would happen if you neglected those teeth until the permanent ones come in. Two, if they have no regular cleaning habits, those permanent teeth aren’t going to stay that way. There are other reasons, but please, heed these.

How do I teach my child to brush their teeth?

The best thing to do is to let them watch you brush your teeth in the morning and in the evening. This will get them interested and they’ll want to do what mom or dad is doing. Then you can get them a child’s toothbrush and show them how to do it themselves.
